Having freshly graduated in the UK, the race to find a job began. After days of browsing the job market and completing countless application forms, I finally found an available position at an organisation that ticked all of the boxes. In line with my studies, my interests and my previous experience, ECPAT International was offering a fundraising internship and with it the opportunity to further my knowledge and interest in human rights. Although my previous interest had been more gender orientated the prospect of developing my understanding of children’s rights, and also advancing and broadening my skills in fundraising for an NGO, made this the perfect opportunity for me.
As a fundraising intern I was responsible for an array of different tasks, both familiar and new. This included research on potential and previous donors, allowing the opportunity to refine my research skills and to become more familiar with a number of government funding agencies and International Organisations, as well as numerous charitable foundations and companies. I was also responsible for compiling briefing papers, factsheets, maintaining databases, as well as more creative tasks managing several social media profiles and monitoring related news stories.
Not only has this experience given me the opportunity to broaden my skills and abilities in an area of significant personal interest, but has brought with it new friendships, new interests and a new sense of belonging to a place so far away. I would strongly recommend for anyone to pursue an internship with ECPAT International, as I value my six months as having had a genuine impact on my life in so many ways and given me a chance to work to end the commercial sexual exploitation of children.
