Spain: Urgent action needed to counter the growth in child pornography

Despite many efforts made by the Spanish government over the last few years to establish stronger laws and policies to prevent and combat the commercial sexual exploitation of children, Spain is facing many new cases of children being commercially sexually exploited, including a growing number of instances of production and consumption of child pornography. In 2010, Spain was ranked second in the world in terms of file-sharing child pornography, just behind the USA. Such an alarming trend requires the full harmonisation of laws addressing child pornography with relevant international legal standards as well as a more efficient enforcement of existing laws and policies.
